LEVEL 01 · LESSON 04

Why aseptic technique matters

See it

Culture media can support microorganisms as well as plants. Aseptic technique is the collection of practices used to reduce unwanted biological contamination while cultures are established, handled, and maintained. It is a workflow discipline, not a single disinfectant or one-time step.

Understand it

Contamination can come from the plant material, operator, tools, vessels, air, surfaces, water, or media.
Some contaminants are obvious; others can remain latent or difficult to detect.
Good records help distinguish a one-off contamination event from a repeating process problem.
Important boundary

Aseptic technique reduces risk; it does not guarantee that contamination can never occur.

Try it

Explain the concept in your own words, then identify what plant, explant, stage, units, source, or observation context would need to be preserved before applying it.
