LEVEL 07 · LESSON 04
Browning and oxidation

See it
Cut plant tissues can release phenolic compounds and undergo oxidation, producing browning that can inhibit regeneration or kill tissues in some species. Severity can depend on plant material, injury, genotype, medium, handling, and time.
Understand it
Record when browning begins and how quickly it progresses.
Distinguish localized wound browning from whole-culture decline.
Use plant-specific literature when evaluating mitigation.
Important boundary
Do not assume every brown tissue is microbial contamination.
Try it
Explain the concept in your own words, then identify what plant, explant, stage, units, source, or observation context would need to be preserved before applying it.
Lesson quiz
Apply it
Connect this lesson to an actual MyTCLab record: what fields would you need in order to know later exactly what happened and why?
