LEVEL 04 · LESSON 04
Gelling agents
See it
Agar, gellan-type products, and other gelling systems can create semi-solid support. Gel strength and chemistry influence water availability, diffusion, handling, and sometimes culture morphology, so the gelling agent is a meaningful part of a protocol.
Understand it
Different gelling agents are not perfectly interchangeable.
Concentration changes can alter physical properties.
Liquid and semi-solid systems create different vessel environments.
Important boundary
Do not treat ‘agar’ as an invisible detail when comparing protocols.
Try it
Explain the concept in your own words, then identify what plant, explant, stage, units, source, or observation context would need to be preserved before applying it.
